Blåtand Artisan Challenge Virtual Event Gallery

..We threw out a challenge to the artisans of Caid, and they answered with a resounding ferver.

…We asked them to show us their arts and sciences, and they didn’t hold back.

….Here it is for all to see.

…..So get comfortable and get ready to be impressed by the talent presented here.

The Blåtand Artisan Challenge of Caid, is a multi layer challenge created in response to the need for social distancing during the Covid-19 Pandemic.  Blåtand references the 10th century Norse King Haraldr Blåtand (Bluetooth) Gormsen, known for uniting the Danish tribes into one Kingdom, and for whom bluetooth technology was named.  Much like bluetooth technology connects devices, this challenge is a means to connect artisans with the Kingdom at a time when we cannot connect in person.  Created as an alternative venue to replace the cancelled arts and sciences competitions and displays, and provide a much needed opportunity for Caidan artisans to display their work, and receive feedback, this is an event that will take place completely online.

Below you will find photos of the items entered, along with the submitted documentation that explains the item and its historical context.  On April 25, the items entered into the competition will be scored by subject matter experts.  The top five scores will then be announced here.  The populace will then chose their favorite from those five.  Voting will start April 26 and end April 27 at 8pm.

Congratulations to Lady Sekhet Arsyna, winner of the Blåtand Challenge!

Copy of ‘The Tailor’
Oil on canvas copy of ‘The Tailor’ by Giovanni Battista Moroni 1570-1575
Documentation: ‘The Tailor’ by Giovanni Battista Moroni 1570-75
Moroni was an Italian painter 1525-1568 noted for his dignified portraits, mostly of the petty aristocracy and bourgeoisie. One of the few Italian Renaissance painters who specialized in portraiture, Moroni was a pupil of the painter Moretto da Bescia. ‘The Tailor’ is one of his best-known works, featuring his greyed tonal painting and restrained treatment of cloth. Moroni was influenced also by Titian, who admired his work. The copy is oil on canvas, 16 x 20 inches, using an approximation of Caravaggio’s palette: Umber, Yellow Ochre, Red Ochre, Vermillion, Lead White (Flake White), Carbon Black, Lead Tin Yellow (Cadmium Yellow), Copper ( not available), with French Ultramarine Blue. The actual paint hues used in Moroni’s palette have not been discovered.

Tablet Woven Hallstatt pattern in 3/1 Twill using gold and purple string
This entry uses the same pattern as seen in the “HallTex123” textile fragment found in an Austrian Salt Mine. This is being woven using modern crochet cotton instead of period materials. This documentation was gleaned from my Pentathlon entry in 2015, and modified for the piece I am weaving. This tablet-woven trim will be a gift for a friend.
